The location of Hollywood Casino Joliet was once occupied by the Empress Casino, which opened in 1992. The casino was operated by Argosy Gaming Co., which Penn National Gaming acquired in 2005. The owners renovated the casino in 2009, but the reopening was delayed due to a fire in March. The casino opened in June of the same year under Hollywood Casino. The Egyptian theme of the Empress was replaced by the Hollywood-inspired art deco of the 1920s and ’30s.
