Harrah’s Joliet History

John Hammons, a hotel developer, inaugurated Harrah’s Joliet Casino on May 4, 1993. Back then, only riverboat casinos were permitted in Illinois. Harrah’s launched a 200-foot yacht named Northern Star laden with over 500 slot machines and 40 table games. By early 1994, another boat, Southern Star, was added to their fleet.

In 1999, a hotel worth $30 million was constructed. Harrah’s Joliet was permanently docked two years later when the Illinois law no longer mandated casinos to be on riverboats.

Harrah’s Joliet was operated by Caesars Entertainment. In 2020, it was bought by Eldorado Resorts who subsequently rebranded to Caesars Entertainment.
