Harrah’s Metropolis History

In 1994, the casino initially welcomed visitors under the name Players Island. It underwent a rebranding in 2000 when it was bought by the worldwide gambling corporation currently known as Caesars Entertainment, previously Eldorado Resorts.

In 2017, after a corporate spinoff, Vici Properties acquired the casino. However, Caesars, which continues to operate the casino, immediately leased it back from Vici.

The casino known as Harrah’s Metropolis originally opened its doors to the public as the Players Island casino, an enterprise founded by Players International and Merv Griffin. This was among the earliest casinos established in Illinois. In the year 2000, the casino underwent a change of ownership when Harrah’s Entertainment purchased Players International. Subsequently, the casino was rebranded as Harrah’s Metropolis.

Harrah’s Entertainment was incorporated into Caesars Entertainment, joining more than 50 other establishments including Harrah’s, Caesars Palace and more. In 2017, the ownership of the casino was taken over by Vici Properties, but they leased it back to Caesars Entertainment, who continues to operate the casino.
