Want To Bet On The Fighting Illini? Lawmaker Re-Files Bill To Allow In-State College Wagering

Michael J. Zalewski( D ), an State of Illinois Representative and nbsp, has re-filed a bill that would lift the ban on in-state college sports wagering.

The bill is the same as the one he filed in January. However, the difference is that the new General Assembly is now seated in Illinois.

After a second reading next month, the expenses did not make it past the Rules Committee.

While this wouldn’t pass in time for March Madness betting, there is a chance it could in time for the 2021 college football season.

Northwestern is coming off a winter of sport in which it dominated Auburn in the Citrus Bowl and came close to winning the Big Ten. Illinois sports bookmakers should, ideally, wager on the Wildcats and other groups the following year.

In January, Zalewski tweeted the following:

Today I filed HB5876 which would repeal the prohibition on wagering on in state collegiate games. NCAA athletes were asked to play during COVID. Given that fact, the idea they’d be harmed by wagering is illusory. https://t.co/qMjytt2jMP

His tweet is in reference to concerns that in-state collegiate wagering could harm the athletes.

He did, however, add that he hopes to work with other state legislators to & ldquo, find a way for student athletes to profit from bets placed on competitions they compete in. & rdquo,

How common is betting on university activities?

While professional sports are more popular, college sports make up a significant chunk of Illinois sports betting handle.
